The Commander-in-Chief of the Libyan National Army (LNA), Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar, appointed Major General Ramadan Atiyatallah Bouzid Al-Barasi as the new Chief of Staff of the Border Guard forces.

The LNA’s media office said in a statement that Haftar also assigned Major General Saleh Abdullah Othman Bouabouda as an assistant to Al-Barasi. The LNA controls the eastern Libyan border in addition to Libya’s southern border.

Libya has become the preferred point of departure for thousands of migrants and refugees who cross the Mediterranean to reach Europe.

The International Organisation of Migration (IOM) has identified about 584,500 migrants in Libya.
