Libyan Rivals Commit to Political Process

On Tuesday, the delegations of the eastern-based Libyan Parliament, and the Tripoli-based High Council of State (HCS) agreed to form a mini-committee that would start its work within days.

In a final communiqué of the two-day talks held in Tangiers, Morocco, the two delegations voiced their commitments to adhere to the political process in accordance with international agreements.

Last week, a consultative meeting with the parliament was held in Tangiers. This culminated in the issuance of a statement stipulating that the parliament would convene sessions immediately after returning to Libya, in order to “end the state of division” in the country.

They also agreed to hold presidential and parliamentary elections, in accordance with a constitutional framework and end the transitional phase, within a deadline.

The Moroccan Foreign Minister, Nasser Bourita, said that the participation of 123 MPs in this consultative meeting “was a clear success”. He added that Libya needs a parliament that plays a role in political life and emphasized that the next session in Libya will have a major impact on the political dialogue.
