The General Electricity Company of Libya (GECOL) said in a statement that about 6,150 meters of copper wires have been stolen over the past two days.

According to GECOL, the first and second day of December recorded eight thefts of copper wires. “Thieves have stolen 2,600 meters of copper wires from the Qasr Bin Ghashir district, 20km south of Tripoli,” GECOL said.

GECOL has also said that the continued acts of theft, looting, and attacks against the electrical network and workers have caused additional losses to the company. The electricity company added that these crimes have increased significantly across multiple regions in Libya.

Criminal groups often steal copper wires and resell them on the black market.
