LNA Forces Retake Military Camp in Southern Libyan Region of Ubari

According to military sources, the Libyan National Army (LNA) managed to take over the Al-Maghawir military camp on Sunday. The camp was held by militias affiliated to the Government of National Accord (GNA) and is located in the southern Libyan region of Ubari.

The camp was headed by Ali Kana, who was the commander of the GNA’s militias in the southwestern areas of the country.

The sources indicated that the LNA forces gave the camp’s militias an opportunity to surrender after clashes erupted between the two parties.

It is noteworthy that the Al-Maghawir military camp is of strategic importance to GNA-affiliated militias as it can be used as an outpost to wage attacks on the oil fields of southern Libya.

Libya has been marred in violence between competing forces, militias and extremists since the toppling and killing of Muammar Gaddafi in 2011. The conflict now pits the Tripoli-based GNA against the LNA, led by Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar, for control of the country.
