On Friday, the Italian President Sergio Mattarella warned of the impact of the Libyan crisis on the international community, and its cross-border threat to Rome.

During a meeting with ambassadors on the occasion of Christmas, Mattarella said that, “the Libyan crisis is not only producing painful paths of grief and human suffering, but is also a multiplier of cross-border threats, terrorism, and extremism.”

The Italian President stressed the need to “intervene to address the deep roots that feed these phenomena.” He called for increasing investments in the fields of education, health, and culture in Libya. Mattarella emphasized that this step must be in parallel with measures to combat illegal immigration.
