On Friday, the Director of the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), Badr Al-Din Al-Najjar, announced that Libya has contracted to purchase 2.8 million doses of the Coronavirus vaccine.

In statements to Anadolu Agency, Al-Najjar added that the value of the contract with the World Health Organisation (WHO) amounted to 42 million Libyan Dinars. It is not yet clear which vaccine-producer will provide Libya with its doses.

For his part, the head of the Supreme Advisory Committee on Vaccinations, Suleiman Abu Sriwil, told Anadolu Agency that the contract with the WHO is meant to ensure that purchased vaccines are licensed as well as secure since the organisation bears responsibility for the safety of any vaccine that comes through it.

Libya has witnessed a remarkable increase in the number of people infected with the disease since the beginning of September, and the highest number of infections has reached 1,639 per day.

So far, the total number of coronavirus cases in Libya has reached 97,192. For now, 67,661of the cases have recovered, and 1,399 cases have died.
