Central Bank of Libya Refutes GNA Claims Regarding Scholarships

On Wednesday, the Governor of the Central Bank of Libya (CBL), Al-Siddiq Al-Kabeer, refuted all claims made by the Finance Ministry of the Government of National Accord (GNA) regarding the CBL’s failure to cover a number of financial allocations, including scholarships for Libyan students abroad.

In a statement, Al-Kabeer confirmed that the bank had covered all financial allocations required for the students. He noted that all the fourth quarter transfers related to these scholarships for the year 2020 have been successfully implemented.

He pointed out that they have already telegraphed Libyan embassies abroad, affirming that the finance ministry’s statement in this regard is untrue.

Al-Kabeer’s response came after Faraj Boumtari, the GNA Minister of Finance, released a statement criticizing the CBL. He stated that the bank has not yet covered the accounts of the public treasury in order to be able to pay the students.

“We have demanded for adequate financial coverage to be provided by the Central Bank regarding financial settlements, but this was not approved,” Boumtari said, noting that many decisions have been previously taken regarding salary increases, but they have also not been approved.
