On Wednesday German Ambassador to Libya, Oliver Owcza discussed Libya’s immigration issue with the Head of the Directorate for Combatting Illegal Migration (DCIM), General Al-Mabrouk Abdel-Hafiz.

“In an open and frank discussion with General Mabrouk, Head of DCIM, we welcomed progress in the closure of detention centers along the coast,” Owcza tweeted.

“We likewise discussed the need for durable, rights-based solutions for refugees and migrants and offered continued support,” he added.

The DCIM said in a statement that the meeting was held at its headquarters, with the two sides discussing a number of issues related to illegal immigration.

“We also reviewed Germany’s contribution to combating this phenomenon, which has become a major source of concern for the Mediterranean region,” the DCIM noted.

“Libya is no longer a transit country, but rather a victim and left alone to face a crisis that the countries of the world failed,” Al-Mabrouk said.
