The Head of the Libyan Presidential Council, Mohamed Al-Menfi, said that he is committed to facilitating the general elections in December 2021.
In a televised speech, Al-Menfi added that he and the members of the Council will work as a “one team” with Prime Minister Abdul Hamid Dbeibah.
On Friday, the United National Support Nation Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) announced that Al-Menfi was elected the new head of the Libyan Presidential Council, while Hamid Dbeibah was named the new Prime Minster. The Presidential Council consists of the Head Al-Menfi and three Deputies, namely Musa Al-Koni, Abdullah Hussein Al-Lafi, and Prime Minister Dbeibah.
The transitional government will lead the country until Libya holds its national elections scheduled for December 24th.
UNSMIL’s Acting Head, Stephanie Williams, explained that the next Libyan government must obtain the confidence of parliament within 21 days. Williams stressed the need for the next government to adhere to the ceasefire agreement and remove foreign mercenaries from the country.
