Libyan Government Calls on Parliament to Endorse Budget Law

On Thursday, Spokesman for the Libyan Government of National Unity (GNU), Mohamed Hamouda voiced his hope that the Libyan Parliament would speed up the endorsement of the budget law, so that the GNU can carry out its commitments.

Hamouda told reporters in a press conference today that Prime Minister, Abdel-Hamid Dbaiba and cabinet ministers have yet to discuss the issue of frozen assets as it remains a sovereign matter. He stressed that the news about the government ending oil subsidies was untrue, but they had formed a committee to propose ways to replace the subsidies with money grants.

Hamouda said the GNU was working on unifying the Interior Ministry to strengthen security, and that the ceasefire that was signed in October remained in place, as were the efforts to reopen the coastal road, and unify the military.

“The Prime Minister issued a decision annulling all the orders and decisions made by the Government of National Accord (GNA) and Interim Government in the east after the endorsement of the GNU,” he said.

Hamouda added that the GNU allocated more than 977 million dinars for the General Electricity Company of Libya (GECOL), and permitted it to contract local or international firms to carry out its operations and maintenance plan. He added that the government has launched social media accounts to keep in constant contact with the people.

The Spokesman reiterated that the GNU cabinet also approved urgent measures to support low-income families, including pay raises for the holy month of Ramadan.
