GNA’s Foreign Minister: EU is Putting the GNA on Trial

The Foreign Minister of the Government of National Accord (GNA), Mohamed Taher Siala, expressed his government’s dissatisfaction with the EU’s decision to launch a maritime mission in the Mediterranean to stop the flow of arms into Libya.

In a phone call with the EU ambassador, Siala clarified that “the implementation of the decision implies that the target of the oversight is the GNA, completely ignoring any oversight on the armament of Haftar.” This statement refers to the EU’s decision not to impose land and air monitoring mechanisms.

On Tuesday, the EU agreed to launch a new military operation (called Operation “IRINI”) to monitor the UN arms embargo on Libya, prevent human trafficking and to train the Libyan Coast Guard.
