According to the United Nations Secretary-General’s spokesman, Stephane Dujarric, the continuation of military operations in Tripoli severely affects civilians. The spokesman recalled the United Nations’ demand to stop all hostilities in Libya.

In a statement on Saturday, Dujarric renewed the call for implementing a humanitarian truce to focus efforts on dealing with the outbreak of the coronavirus epidemic in Libya.

He added that the United Nations Mission in Libya reported that the clashes had killed 64 people in the first three months of this year and documented 131 civilian victims, including injuries and deaths.

Dujarric noted the high number of cases of coronavirus infections in Libya which reached 49 cases, including one death, and expressed the support of his organisation and its bodies to Libya, saying “We are working with our partners in the humanitarian field to provide technical support to strengthen national surveillance and early warning.”

He added that the International Organization for Migration (IOM) expresses its deep concern regarding the fate of hundreds of migrants who have been returned to Libya by the Coast Guard this year and are still missing.

He stressed that despite the organisation’s repeated requests to the Libyan government regarding those people and the reason for their transfer to unofficial detention facilities, the Libyan government did not respond.
