The Speaker of the Libyan Parliament, Ageela Saleh, discussed national and international developments in Libya during a phone call with Italian Foreign Minister Luigi Di Maio.
According to Saleh’s media advisor, Hamid Al-Safi, “Ageela Saleh emphasized the need for the international community to respect the will of the Libyan people”, and the role of the Libyan National Army in “combating extremism and armed militias to liberate the whole country.”
Saleh stressed the importance of “preventing the delivery of weapons to armed militias in Tripoli”, with Di Maio confirming Italy’s support for the EU’s Operation ‘IRINI’ to implement the UN arms embargo on Libya.
The Italian Foreign Minister also underlined the need to find a political solution to the crisis based on the outcomes of the Berlin Conference.
He noted that Italy was working alongside its international partners to appoint a new UN Special Envoy to Libya in order to help bring an end to the conflict and restart peace talks.
