A Libyan citizen, Ragab Rahil Abdel-Fadil Al-Magarhy, filed a complaint to the United Nations for being subjected to physical violence at Mitiga prison.
The prison is controlled by the Special Deterrence Force and affiliated with the Government of National Accord (GNA).
According to the complaint, Al-Magarhy claims that the GNA’s Interior Minister, Fathi Bashagha, inspected the prison and gouged out one of his eyes.
This was done in the presence of the commander of the Deterrence Force, Abdel-Raouf Kara, and the prison chief.
He explained “During the Minister’s visit, I was brought in handcuffs alongside some other prisoners to a hall. The Interior Minister approached me, fell me to my knees and gouged out one of my eyes with a spoon. I quickly lost consciousness.”
Despite fearing acts of reprisals by the GNA authorities, Al-Magarhy called on the United Nations to carry out an independent investigation into the GNA officials and bring them to justice.
