The Interior Minister of the Government of National Unity (GNU), Emad Trabelsi denied the existence of “many” cases of fake national ID numbers, and nationalities in state records.
He revealed that the GNU is “working on a project to match the data in paper records with the national ID’s on the e-system.” The project aims to “expose processes in national ID’s as well as nationality impersonators.”
Trabelsi added that the project was launched under the instructions of Prime Minister Abdel-Hamid Dbaiba.
He noted that a team of experts was formed to start the project, and detect fraudulent registrations on the e-system. Teams of prosecutors have also been formed to scrutinize the results of this project, under the supervision of the Attorney General.
“The competent committees have the rights and power to withdraw the nationality if it is forged,” he added.
In August 2022, the Libyan Attorney General, Al-Siddiq Al-Sour revealed the forgery of 88,819 ID numbers that are not recorded by the civil registry’s system. He noted that the forged ID’s were being used by criminals to receive salaries from the state.
During a press conference he said the beneficiaries received about 208,269,756 million Libyan dinars illegally.
Al-Sour noted that investigations into the civil registry’s system began in 2017. He warned against “any person who commits violations will not escape punishment.”
He announced an investigation into the granting of 48,000 national ID numbers to non-Libyans, as well as the presence of nearly 64,000 national ID numbers in the system, that are not registered in the civil registry’s system.
Al-Sour said Public Prosecution monitored 3,829 forged ballot cards for the elections, which were supposed to take place at the end of 2021. “We also monitored the presence of 15,000 forged electoral cards during the 2012 General National Congress elections,” he added.
