The Russian Foreign Ministry stated on Monday that the Egyptian peace initiative, known as the “Cairo Declaration” for Libya, must be the main framework to decide the future of the country.

In a statement, the Ministry added that Moscow was expecting the Government of National Accord (GNA) in Tripoli, to respond to the Cairo Declaration. It believes that this comprehensive initiative, should serve as a basis for the long overdue negotiations between the warring sides.

“We hope that the authorities in Tripoli will respond swiftly, and constructively to the peace initiative launched by Cairo” It added.

On Saturday, Egyptian President, Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, announced a new initiative for Libya which proposes a newly elected Presidential Council, and a ceasefire that would begin on Monday.
