The Head of the High National Elections Commission (HNEC), Emad Al-Sayeh received the Russian Ambassador to Libya, Aydar Aganin and his accompanying delegation in Tripoli.
The meeting explored the latest updates in the electoral processes, the commission’s preparedness, and its readiness level to carry it out. They also focused on the support and expert advice Russia can provide in managing and executing elections.
Additionally, the meeting reviewed ways to bolster proposals and efforts to ensure their success in line with international standards.
Aganin reaffirmed his support for the commission’s efforts to achieve free and credible elections, which reflect the will of the Libyan voter and aspirations towards peace and stability.”
Last month, the Prime Minister of Libya’s Government of National Unity (GNU), Abdel-Hamid Dbaiba held talks with the newly-appointed Aganin.
The primary focus of their discussions was the resumption of Moscow’s diplomatic activities in Libya.
An official statement detailed that both parties agreed to relocate the Russian Embassy back to Tripoli, by August.
During the meeting, Dbaiba highlighted the importance of a “united international stance concerning Libya.” He emphasized the need for “recognition and respect for the country’s territorial integrity and sovereignty, while urging an end to all forms of foreign interventions.”
Aganin relayed Russian President Vladimir Putin’s affirmation of the need to strengthen bilateral ties with Libya. Putin also expressed his support for the GNU’s endeavours toward ensuring stability and conducting successful elections.
Libya has been in chaos since a NATO-backed uprising toppled longtime leader Muammar Gaddafi in 2011. The county has for years been split between rival administrations, each backed by rogue militias and foreign governments.
The current stalemate grew out of the failure to hold elections in December 2021, and the refusal of Dbaiba, who is leading the transitional government, to step down.
