The African Union’s Peace and Security Council voiced its concern over the escalating crisis in Libya. It reiterated its rejection to all forms of foreign interference in Libya’s internal affairs.

In a statement issued by the Council at its 929th meeting that was chaired by Algeria, the participants expressed their deep concerns over the situation in Libya.
It added that the continued fighting undermines all efforts being exerted to combat the COVID-19 epidemic. It was also adversely affecting the current social and economic situation in the country.

the AU welcomed the readiness expressed by the warring parties, namely, the Libyan National Army (LNA) and the Government of National Accord (GNA) to return to the negotiating table. Referring to the return of talks within the United Nations Support Mission in Libya’s (UNSMIL) framework of the 5+5 Joint Military Commission. This should allow for a lasting humanitarian truce to be reached, and bring an end to the conflict

The Council strongly condemned all forms of external interference that undermine national sovereignty, and peace efforts in Africa. It stressed the need to ensure that all external peace and security efforts are directed towards achieving the goals and priorities of the African Union.

The Chairman of the AU Commission, Moussa Faki, stressed the urgent need to silence guns in Africa, stop conflicts, and ensure the cessation of ongoing hostilities. He emphasized the necessity of using all means to free Africa from the scourge of terrorism and armed groups. He reiterated the calls for an immediate arms embargo, and an end to human and drug trafficking.
