The Prime Minister of the Libyan Parliament-designated government, Osama Hammad discussed the reconstruction of Derna, during a meeting with representatives of Egyptian engineering companies in Libya, on Wednesday.
The meeting was attended by Hatem Al-Arabi, the Chairman of the Benghazi Reconstruction and Stability Committee.
According to a statement by the government, Hamad stressed the necessity of initiating the reconstruction in Derna and its suburbs, after the completion of search and rescue operations.
He emphasised the need to expedite the projects in the city, due to their importance in providing services to residents of the affected areas.
On Sunday, the UN Special Envoy to Libya, Abdoulaye Bathily proposed the establishment of a comprehensive mechanism, to oversee the recovery and reconstruction efforts in the disaster-stricken areas of eastern Libya. The mechanism aims to prioritize projects, and ensure accountability.
Storm Daniel, which recently hit eastern Libya, has so far claimed the lives of more than 3,250 individuals, with thousands more still missing. This torrential onslaught severely affected vital cities and regions, notably Derna, Benghazi, Al-Bayda, Al-Marj, and Soussa.
Meanwhile, MP’s representing the affected areas have proposed the creation of an agency, under the supervision of the Cabinet to handle the reconstruction of those areas.
Last week, the Speaker of the Libyan Parliament, Ageela Saleh affirmed that the government is being tasked with restoring normalcy, within a period not exceeding six months.
Saleh urged the government to “intensify its efforts in confronting the catastrophe.” He expressed gratitude to friendly countries for their assistance during these challenging circumstances.
The Egyptian Ministry of Defence stated that it has deployed search and rescue aircraft, to help the rescue operation in eastern Libya.
The aircrafts will search for bodies, and rescue the injured in the devastated areas affected by the recent floods in the city of Derna.
