Libyan Tribal Council: ‘Libyans support LNA in war on terrorism’

The spokesperson for the Supreme Council of Sheikhs and Elders, Abu Bakr Suleiman Mardamah, affirmed that “all Libyans” are standing together behind the Libyan National Army (LNA) in combating “terrorism” and the “Turkish invasion” of Libya.

In a statement released on “Al Ain News”, Mardamah explained that the Council has already begun the process to enforce its decision to sue both Qatar and Turkey on charges of war crimes in Libya.

Mardamah argued that Turkey’s military presence in Tripoli is shameful and that it is rejected by Libyans from all corners of the country.

In his statement, Mardamah also criticised the Muslim Brotherhood, accusing the group of taking advantage of Libya and its people for their own self-interest.

Mardamah then reaffirmed that the Libyan Tribal Council had made it clear that tribal elders are responsible for the ongoing oil blockade that has effectively brought Libya’s economy to a standstill with losses reaching ~$2.9 billion since it started in January. The spokesperson added that “whoever wants to negotiate should consult the Council itself”.

The Supreme Council of Sheikhs and Elders was formed following the gathering of over 3000 tribal elders and prominent Libyan social figures in Tarhunah on February 18th, 2020. It is led by Saleh Al-Fandi and consists of leaders of their respective towns, regions, or tribes.
