The Libyan Health Ministry of the Government of National Unity (GNU) has contracted 299 Egyptian medical personnel to address the shortage of medical staff in Libya.
The announcement of the contract was made during a reception by the Deputy Prime Minister and Acting Minister of Health, Ramadan Abu Janah, for the contracted medical and assistant medical personnel from Egypt, on Tuesday.
The Ministry of Health stated that this step is part of efforts to address the shortage of specialized medical and assistant medical personnel to operate health institutions in southern and remote areas.
These personnel are expected to be deployed to hospitals and medical centers in the southern region.
Last week, Abu Janah discussed enhancing cooperation with a WHO representative and head of the mission in Libya, Ahmed Zwiten.
The meeting addressed proposals and a plan from the Health Insurance Fund to provide distinguished healthcare services, aiming to establish a healthcare financing system that ensures participation and sustainability.
The two sides discussed the activation of healthcare services for all Libyans across age groups, economic abilities, and health conditions.
Additionally, they discussed launching the WHO’s general plan in Libya for the next five years and initiating the digitization of the healthcare system.
Last month, the United States (US) Special Envoy to Libya, Richard Norland, affirmed support for efforts aimed at enhancing sustainable and ongoing improvements in healthcare systems in Libya.
Norland participated in a virtual meeting with officials from the Libyan Ministry of Health, during their visit to the US to meet with healthcare providers and hospitals in New York, Los Angeles, and Washington, D.C.
He expressed his gratitude to the Director of the US-Libya Business Chamber, Debbie Hersch, for hosting the virtual discussion.
Norland stated, “we welcome their visit and support efforts aimed at enhancing sustainable and ongoing improvements in healthcare systems and healthcare in Libya and around the world.”
