The Libyan House of Representatives has issued a statement following the distressing events in the city of Aljmail, which included attacks on state institutions and citizens’ properties.

The statement expressed the House’s strong condemnation of the irresponsible actions by unregulated armed groups, which have intimidated the city’s residents and threatened civil and social peace.

The House also noted the peaceful mass demonstrations by the city’s residents, who are calling for the withdrawal of all armed formations and for security forces to take over maintaining order and stability in Aljmail.

The Representatives demanded the complete evacuation of Aljmail from all armed groups without exception and urged the Libyan government to engage with the city’s residents to provide support and assistance.

Reiterating its stance from numerous previous statements, the House emphasized the urgent need to end the phenomenon of armed groups operating outside state control, which have caused widespread corruption in cities. The statement called for the collection of weapons to be monopolized by official security agencies, reinforcing the government’s role in ensuring national security.

Days ago, armed clashes erupted south of Al-Zawiya city between an armed group from Zawiya and residents of the cities of Jamil and Rigdaleen.

The clashes, involving various types of weapons, are taking place in the areas of Um Habish and Al-Aqrabiya.

Reports on the cause of the clashes are conflicting. Some sources claim they were sparked by the targeting of a citizen from Jamil and the burning of civilians’ cars from the city. Other sources suggest the clashes broke out following local protests over deteriorating security conditions.

These ongoing conflicts highlight the fragile security situation in the region, raising concerns about further escalation and the impact on local communities.

Over the years, kidnappings, arrests, and assassinations have increased substantially in western Libya. This is evident in the repeated statements of the Ministry of Interior, about the arrest of gangs and individuals involved in the kidnapping and extortion of expatriate workers.
