Ousted Libyan mufti al-Sadiq al-Gharyani said that the people who participated in the tribal movement that caused the closure of oil fields and ports are a group of ‘bandits’.
During an interview with Al-Tanasuh TV, al-Gharyani called upon their fathers to prevent them from continuing the oil blockade, or they too would be seen as culprits along with their sons.
He added that according to the Holy Qur’an bandits can be punished by being sentenced to death, crucified, maiming or being sent into exile.
Oil facilities in Libya have been closed since January 18, 2020, when a popular movement orchestrated by tribal elders who support the Libyan National Army (LNA) decided to protest Turkey’s decision to send troops to Libya and allegations of corruption within Libya’s financial institutions by intervening on the country’s economic lifeline.[review]
In 2014, British authorities banned al-Ghiryani from entering the UK after it emerged he had been helping direct the Islamist-led takeover of Tripoli from England.
