Talal Al-Maihoub, the head of the Defence and National Security Committee in the Libyan House of Representatives, asserted Libya’s resolute stance on the new US sanctions imposed on Russia. He confidently declared that these sanctions would have no impact on Libya or its economic stability.
He emphasised the robust relationships Libya maintains with its friendly and allied nations, relationships founded on strict adherence to international laws.
Al-Maihoub further underscored Libya’s unwavering commitment to upholding its sovereign rights, firmly rejecting any external interference in its internal affairs, be it political or economic. He reiterated Libya’s steadfast dedication to international treaties and agreements governing its economic and political relations with other nations.
He assured that Libya’s economic and political decisions would continue to be safeguarded within the framework of international law. He emphasized that any efforts to influence Libya’s policies or economy would be met with staunch resistance through available international mechanisms.
Additionally, the lawmaker stressed that Libya’s political and economic stability remains non-negotiable. The Libyan government remains steadfast in its commitment to international cooperation and the cultivation of strategic partnerships with friendly and allied nations, grounded in mutual respect and shared interests.
Highlighting the paramount importance of maintaining international relations based on trust and mutual respect, Al-Maihoub expressed confidence in Libya’s capability to achieve complete independence in formulating both its internal and external policies, free from external interference.
Notably, the Russian Ambassador to Libya, Aydar Aganin, emphasised that elections are the only way to establish legitimate institutions that will lead Libya towards future development and prosperity.
He acknowledged the difficult situation in Libya, noting that the political division is painful for Russia given their historical ties. Aganin called on Libyan parties to genuinely work towards ending the division and unifying the country and its institutions.
In remarks to Al-Jazeera news, Aganin stressed the importance of forming sovereign institutions and granting them legitimacy through the ballot box. He expressed Russia’s desire to see Libya as a unified, secure, and prosperous state, highlighting that Russia maintains contact with all parties and excludes no one.
The ambassador mentioned that Russia is present in Tripoli and collaborates with the Government of National Unity (GNU). He also noted that there have been numerous visits from western Libya to Russia.
Earlier, Aganin has refuted the claims made in Western media reports about Moscow’s intention to establish military bases in Libya.
In an interview with Russia Today, Aganin stated, “We do not have any military bases in Libya, and we have no plans to establish a permanent military base in Libya.”
