Libyan House of Representatives Speaker, Ageela Saleh, announced that 50 MPs have submitted a memorandum to terminate the mandate of Abdul-Hamid Dbaiba’s Government of National Unity (GNU).

The memorandum asserts that the government appointed by the House of Representatives (HoR), led by Osama Hammad, should be recognised as the legitimate government.

It also calls for the transfer of the title of Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces from the Presidential Council to the Speaker of the HoR, as stipulated in the Constitutional Declaration.

During a session of the House on Tuesday, Saleh read out the decision, stating: “The House of Representatives has decided to end the mandate of the executive authority established during the transitional phase and to recognise Mr. Hammad’s government as the legitimate government until a unified government is selected.

“Additionally, the Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces shall be the Speaker of the House of Representatives, as outlined in the Constitutional Declaration and the House’s decision,” Saleh added.

The attending members of the session voted on the memorandum, with Saleh announcing that it was “unanimously approved.”
