The US Embassy in Libya said that it has contributed more than $15.7 million over the past year to assist Libyan communities affected by the devastating floods in Derna and across eastern Libya.

The embassy pointed out in a statement that, this funding has been crucial in providing access to essential services, including food, water, healthcare, protection, shelter, and mental health and psychosocial assistance.

“Our support extends beyond immediate relief, as we continue to contribute to the ongoing reconstruction and development efforts in the region,” it added.

“Today marks one year since the tragic floods in Derna and eastern Libya claimed thousands of lives, displaced many more, and caused widespread devastation. We extend our heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims and reaffirm our commitment to standing with the people of Libya in times of need,” it noted.

The anniversary of the tragedy in Derna and other flood-affected communities serves as a reminder of the inspiring unity that the Libyan people displayed in their immediate response to the crisis. However, Libya continues to face urgent needs for unity and the transparent, effective management of its resources.

The US urged all key Libyan stakeholders to engage constructively with the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) to de-escalate current tensions and reenergize the political process.

It stressed that is crucial to reach a lasting settlement that ensures the stability and prosperity of Libya. The United States remains committed to supporting Libya’s path toward a peaceful and prosperous future.
