On Tuesday, Tunisian Minister of Foreign Affairs Noureddine Erray held a telephone conversation with his U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo. The two discussed ways to enhance cooperation in the UN Security Council, strengthen bilateral relations, and advance a negotiated political solution to end the conflict in Libya.

During the call, Pompeo renewed his commitment to economic cooperation with Tunisia and fostering stronger commercial ties to aid recovery in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Notably, Pompeo also discussed the situation in Libya with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov. The two sides tackled resolving crises in several areas in the world including Syria, Libya, and Afghanistan.

Libya has been torn by a civil war since its long-time leader Muammar Gaddafi was overthrown in 2011. Eastern Libya is governed by the House of Representatives (HoR) and supported by the Libyan National Army (LNA). Western Libya is controlled by the internationally recognised Government of National Accord (GNA), which is primarily backed politically and militarily by Turkey.
