On Wednesday, Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Abul Gheit pointed out that the League has rejected and condemned all forms of foreign interference in Libya.
“Libya remains an important Arab country and the Arab League cannot accept that Libya would be a theater for foreign military interference,” he said. Abul Gheit stressed that there was an absolute Arab commitment to preserving Libya’s independence and territorial integrity.
On Tuesday, the Supreme Council of Sheikhs of Libya said it supported the Libyan parliament’s call for Egyptian military intervention in Libya to end the Turkish interference in the country’s internal affairs.
In its statement, the Council stressed that there was a strong relationship between the Libyan and Egyptian people, adding that threats to Libya’s national security would also affect Egypt.
“Ankara wants to seize the wealth of Libya and the capabilities of its people. Turkey may attack Sirte and Jufra, given the recent visit of the Turkish Defense Minister… Every Libyan must follow the correct path to restore stability to the country”, he said.
Oil-rich Libya has been marred in chaos since the ouster and killing of Muammar Gaddafi in 2011. It now has two rival authorities and a multitude of armed groups vying for control of the country.
