Libya has reiterated its commitment to promoting and safeguarding human rights at both national and global levels while denouncing what it called the double standards adopted by certain countries in dealing with these rights.
The remarks were delivered by Mohamed Abusnena, Counselor of Libya’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations, during a session of the Social, Humanitarian, and Cultural Committee (Third Committee) at the 79th session of the UN General Assembly in New York.
In a statement shared on the mission’s Facebook page, Abusnena highlighted Libya’s efforts toward empowering women, noting the increase in female representation in municipal councils. He also emphasised Libya’s support for education, especially for children and girls, and the social protection programs that ensure a decent life for unemployed women.
The statement expressed regret over the continued denial of developmental rights to developing nations and called for a reform of the international human rights system to ensure greater fairness and effectiveness, free from selectivity and double standards.
Libya stressed the need for a collaborative approach to human rights, urging the international community to avoid politicising these issues for narrow interests.
Additionally, the Libyan mission voiced concern about the rise in global human rights violations, highlighting the long-standing abuses in the occupied Palestinian territories. The statement described the ongoing situation in Gaza as an “unprecedented humanitarian tragedy.”
The Libyan delegation condemned the political justifications offered by some nations, which it argued contradict basic humanitarian principles, and called on the international community to hold the occupying authority accountable for its actions.
