UN Holds Workshop to Empower Libyan Civil Society in Electoral Security

On Wednesday, the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) held a workshop on the role of Libyan civil society in promoting electoral security.

Organized in cooperation with the Ministry of Interior, the Ministry of Youth, the High National Elections Commission (HNEC), and various civil society organizations, the workshop aimed to foster collaboration for transparent, inclusive, and safe elections.

According to UNSMIL, active engagement from civil society groups—including youth organizations, scouts, and women’s associations—plays a vital role in enhancing the integrity of the electoral process.

These efforts contribute to building trust in the elections by educating voters, raising awareness, and developing capacity among key stakeholders. This collective approach is intended to secure broad public participation in a safe voting environment, ensuring the credibility of the elections.

Libya’s journey toward elections has faced significant challenges, including political divisions, security risks, and logistical hurdles.

Although elections are viewed as a crucial step toward national reconciliation, multiple delays have occurred in recent years due to disputes between political factions and security concerns posed by militia groups. UNSMIL, in cooperation with national authorities, continues to push for free and fair elections as a way to restore legitimacy to Libya’s institutions and end the political impasse.

The workshop reflects ongoing efforts by UNSMIL and Libyan authorities to prepare the country for long-overdue elections. The Ministry of Interior plays a key role in ensuring public safety throughout the process, while the Ministry of Youth focuses on mobilizing young Libyans to participate actively. Their combined efforts highlight the importance of engaging all segments of society in shaping Libya’s future.
