Egypt and China Discuss Latest Developments in Libya

On Friday, Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry held a telephone conversation with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi. The discussion focused on the situation in Libya and several issues of mutual interest.

According to Ahmed Hafez, the official spokesman of the Egyptian Foreign Ministry, Shoukry reviewed Egypt’s stance towards the Libyan crisis, ensuring the preservation of Libya’s unity, security, and territorial integrity.

This would only be achieved by seeking a political solution to the crisis and the rebuilding of state institutions, he said. Egypt has sought to implement a ceasefire and a political solution to the Libyan conflict by proposing a political initiative dubbed the ‘Cairo Declaration’. The latter would see Libyan-led negotiations that reflect the people’s will and are in line with the outcomes of the Berlin Conference, Shoukry said.

Hafez added that the Egyptian Foreign Minister stressed the necessity of supporting efforts to confront terrorist groups, armed militias, and foreign intervention. This has led to an escalation in the fighting, complicating the situation and posing a threat to regional security and stability.
