US Chargé d’Affaires to Libya Jeremy Berndt held talks in Benghazi with Lieutenant General Khaled Haftar to address military unification efforts and security reforms across the country.
Berndt described the meeting as a productive exchange, emphasising US support for Libya’s military institutions. He highlighted ongoing US engagement with Libyan military officers from both eastern and western regions.
In a statement, Berndt stressed the importance of unifying Libya’s military apparatus and enhancing the capabilities of professional security forces. “The United States is committed to supporting Libyan-led efforts to establish a cohesive military and strengthen security infrastructure nationwide,” he said.
The visit comes amid heightened international focus on stabilising Libya and facilitating its transition toward national elections. Military unification remains a key objective, as fragmented forces have contributed to political instability and security challenges in recent years.
Lieutenant General Khaled Haftar, who oversees military operations in eastern Libya, welcomed US efforts to foster dialogue between divided factions. The talks also explored potential areas of collaboration to reinforce institutional cohesion and bolster the effectiveness of Libya’s security forces.
The US continues to play a diplomatic role in Libya, actively engaging with key stakeholders to promote a peaceful resolution to the country’s divisions. This includes supporting the UN-backed political process and addressing security sector reforms as part of broader stabilisation efforts.
