UN Condemns Assassination Attempt on Libyan Minister in Tripoli

The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) has strongly condemned the assassination attempt on Adel Jomaa, Libya’s Minister of State for Cabinet Affairs. The attack took place in Tripoli Wednesday, raising concerns over security and political stability in the capital.

In a statement, UNSMIL expressed its deep concern and wished Jumaa a full and speedy recovery. The UN mission called for a swift, full, and transparent investigation into the incident, urging authorities to bring the perpetrators to justice.

The attack comes amid ongoing political tensions in Libya, where armed groups continue to exert influence. UNSMIL emphasised that there is no justification for violence against public officials or civilians. It warned that such incidents threaten stability in Tripoli and across the country.

Local authorities have yet to release details on the identity of the attackers or their motives. However, security forces have increased their presence in key areas of the capital. Officials have not confirmed whether Jumaa sustained injuries during the attack.

Libya remains politically divided between rival administrations in the east and west. Armed groups operate with relative impunity, and targeted attacks on officials have been reported in recent years. The international community has repeatedly called for security sector reform and the disarmament of militias.

The attempted assassination of a high-ranking government official highlights the fragile security situation in Tripoli. It also raises concerns about the broader implications for Libya’s political stability and ongoing efforts to achieve national reconciliation.
