Flights Suspended At Libya’s Misrata Airport Due To Fire

On Tuesday, the Libyan Airports Authority has decided to suspend all flights from Misrata International Airport until further notice. This is due to a fire breaking out at the passenger terminal on Monday evening.

Initial unofficial reports say an electric short circuit may have caused the fire.

In a statement, the Authority also announced that it will resume flights from Tripoli’s Mitiga International Airport beginning on Sunday. Officials are waiting for the completion of maintenance work currently being carried out at the airport, which hinders the operational process at the present time.

Misrata airport had reopened on Sunday the 26th July, for one-way commercial flights carrying passengers out of Libya, and exceptional flights from Europe organised to repatriate Libyans stranded abroad.

Libyan Airlines announced that it will resume its regular international flights, after a four-month hiatus due to the COVID-19 outbreak. In a statement, the company explained that the decision will be restricted to departing flights only.

On the 15th of March, Libya closed its land and air borders, along with a vast majority of countries worldwide, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
