On Thursday, the European Union (EU) Ambassador to Libya, Nicola Orlando, called for urgent steps to secure a lasting ceasefire in Tripoli and ensure accountability for the recent outbreak of violence in the capital.
In a statement posted on his official X account, Orlando confirmed that he met today in Tripoli with Presidential Council Chairman Mohamed al-Mnifi. During the meeting, the ambassador expressed the EU’s full support for ongoing efforts aimed at stabilizing the situation and protecting civilians and infrastructure from further harm.
“I emphasized the need for the Presidential Council to engage constructively in a comprehensive process facilitated by the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL),” Orlando said. He underlined that such a process should focus on preserving national stability, addressing the root causes of division, and reviving the political track with the participation of all key Libyan stakeholders.
The EU envoy also stressed the importance of accountability for those responsible for recent violence, signaling a clear call for justice and transparency in response to the deteriorating security conditions in Tripoli.
Clashes erupted in the capital earlier this week following the reported assassination of Abdelghani Al-Kikli (“Ghneiwa”), head of the now-disbanded Stability Support Apparatus, leading to widespread fighting between rival armed groups. The violence, which left civilian casualties and damaged critical infrastructure, raised alarm both domestically and internationally.
Orlando reiterated the European Union’s commitment to standing by the Libyan people during this critical period, highlighting the population’s pressing demands for peace, unity, and good governance.
“We agreed to remain in close contact in the coming days,” the ambassador concluded, reflecting the EU’s intention to remain actively engaged in Libya’s stabilization process.
