US oilfield service company SLB has announced plans to deploy advanced digital technologies and artificial intelligence solutions in Libya to support efforts to increase national oil production this year.
Speaking at the Libya Energy and Economic Summit 2026, the Houston-based company (SLB) Executive Vice President Steve Gassen said the company will introduce AI-powered monitoring systems, remote operations, and fully digital production workflows across Libyan oilfields.
These initiatives aim to support the National Oil Corporation in reaching its target of producing 1.6 million barrels of oil per day by the end of the year.
Gassen said the company’s approach represents a new operational model for Libya’s energy sector, noting that digital deployment is expected to accelerate significantly. He explained that artificial intelligence and real-time data analysis will improve efficiency in mature fields, enhance reliability, and reduce operational risks while lowering costs.
Among the key initiatives is the rollout of SLB’s Lumi data and AI platform, alongside intelligent monitoring systems that have already reduced physical wellsite visits by more than 90 percent. The company has also implemented smart stimulation programs in cooperation with the Sirte Oil Company, leading to production increases of up to sixfold in reactivated wells.
SLB plans to further expand digital gas-lift automation systems and deploy advanced drilling technologies across major oilfields. In parallel, the company will conduct studies aimed at reducing gas flaring, aligning with sustainability goals and future-focused energy strategies.
The company currently operates six operational bases and two training centers in Libya and is preparing specialized training programs for 2026. These programs are designed to enhance the skills of Libyan engineers, with a focus on digital oilfield technologies, automation, and advanced production techniques.
SLB said that its long-term commitment to Libya is centered on combining technological innovation with workforce development to unlock the full potential of existing oilfields.
Company officials stressed that artificial intelligence and digital solutions will play a central role in supporting Libya’s production growth, improving operational performance, and ensuring the sustainability of the country’s energy sector.
