On Friday, Russian Foreign Minister, Sergei Lavrov said that he was communicating with Egypt and Morocco regarding the Libyan conflict.

In an interview with Sputnik, Lavrov added: “We held consultations with the Turks in Ankara a few days ago, and we are communicating with Egypt and Morocco regarding Libya. We will try to support this process, and contribute to the political settlement.”

Turkey’s Foreign Minister, Mevlut Cavusoglu, said in an interview with CNN Turk that officials from Turkey and Russia are close to reaching an agreement over a ceasefire and a political process in Libya.

These developments coincide with the intensification of international efforts to launch negotiations on a political solution. The acting head of the UN Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), Stephanie Williams, claimed that there is an opportunity to revive the political process in the country.

The UN and Germany have announced that preparations are underway to hold a second international conference, on 5 October. This will be attended by the UN Secretary-General, German officials, a number of foreign ministers, as well as representatives from Libya’s warring parties.
