US Ambassador Discusses Libya with Egypt’s Military Intelligence Chief

On Sunday, the US Ambassador to Libya, Richard Norland, held a meeting with Major General Khaled Megawer, the head of Egypt’s military intelligence service. They discussed the latest developments in the ongoing Libyan crisis.

Sources indicated that the meeting came within the framework of Cairo’s efforts to heal the rift between Libya’s warring parties. They added that Ambassador Norland is due to meet with the Speaker of the Libyan Parliament, Ageela Saleh, on Monday.

The Ambassador praised Egypt’s role in the success of the recent Hurghada negotiations. These talks centred on military, security, and the push for peace in the region.

They also yielded a set of recommendations, including the immediate release and exchange of prisoners of war, and putting an end to all hate speech campaigns in the media by replacing them with a discourse of tolerance and reconciliation. The 5+5 Joint Military Commission talks will continue this week.

Libya is divided between two factions; the Libyan Parliament and Interim Government, supported by the Libyan National Army (LNA) in the east. Together, they oppose the Tripoli-based Government of National Accord (GNA), which is internationally recognised, but is not accepted by the Parliament.
