Italian Foreign Minister, Luigi Di Maio, renewed his full support for a comprehensive political solution to the Libyan crisis. He stressed that this must be through Libyan-led political dialogue, under the auspices of the UN.
Di Maio stressed the importance of the commitments made regarding the Libyan crisis at the Berlin Conference. During his attendance before a closed high-level ministerial meeting chaired by the UN and Germany, he expressed his hope that the institutional and political progress, made in the Montreux and Bouznika talks, will be strengthened at the next Libyan Political Dialogue Forum. He also stressed the need for a complete cessation of external interference in the conflict, and military support for the warring parties.
Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, stressed the need for the Libyan parties to shoulder their responsibilities. He added that external parties with influence should make peace a priority. Guterres called for encouragement, and support for the UN peace efforts.
The meeting was attended by the foreign ministers of the countries participating in the Berlin Conference, as well as senior representatives of regional and sub-regional organisations, and neighbouring countries. This includes countries like Algeria, Sudan, Tunisia, Chad, Niger, Morocco and South Africa.
