The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) welcomed the approval by the Libyan National Army (LNA) and the Government of National Accord (GNA) to immediately stop all hostilities and allow local authorities to respond to the unprecedented public health challenge posed by COVID-19.
UNSMIL expressed its hope that the two parties would commit to an immediate cessation of hostilities on all fronts in order to unite Libyans against the threat of the deadly virus.
In a statement, the Mission also called on all parties to work together to suspend military operations, reject toxic foreign interference, and enable health authorities to fight this global pandemic.
“We hope that the humanitarian truce will lead to an agreement and a political solution between the two parties regarding a final ceasefire in the context of the work of the Joint Military Commission (5 + 5),” the Mission added.
The United Nations, Western and Arab countries called on the two parties to immediately cease hostilities and confront the threat of a potential Coronavirus outbreak in the country.
