The acting Head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), Stephanie Williams, confirmed that the permanent ceasefire agreement was a fundamental achievement in the conflict.

In an interview with Al-Arabiya television channel, Williams confirmed that the 5+5 Joint Military Commission (JMC), will soon meet in Libya

Williams also revealed that the next step will be to work to remove mercenaries from the country. This is in reference to the Syrian fighters transferred by Turkey to support the forces of the Government of National Accord (GNA). She said, “Our next step is to activate the provision, for the exit of mercenaries and foreign fighters.”

Williams explained that there are efforts to integrate some armed groups into the Libyan National Army. She explained that the ceasefire agreement includes ending military training programs and also commended the progress made so far by the Libyan parties. Williams also took note of the resumption of flights from Tripoli to Benghazi, and the resumption of Libyan oil exports. Finally, she referred to the officials who negotiated in Geneva as “courageous” people.
