UNSMIL: All Parties Must Stop Training Programs

On Saturday, the Head of the UN Support Mission to Libya (UNSMIL), Stephanie Williams, said that all countries participating in the Berlin process have agreed to it, except for Qatar.

During an interview with Al-Arabiya Channel, Williams noted that the UN mission is continuing to extend bridges of communication with the Libyans to implement the ceasefire. She said: “We hope that these countries lend a hand to the Libyans.”

She explained that the ceasefire agreement in Libya, which was reached by the (5+5) Joint Military Committee (JMC) “is beginning to bring desired results on the ground.”

Regarding the security memorandum of understanding signed between the GNA Interior Minister and Qatar, she answered, “This is an agreement at the technical level, and I did not discuss this matter with the Minister of Interior of the GNA. The ceasefire agreement demanded to stop training programs, and all parties must respect it.”

“The ceasefire will be monitored under the auspices of the United Nations, with the Libyan parties, and the JMC being the essential tools in all these efforts,” she said, adding that “There is a possibility of international observers working under the umbrella of the United Nations.”

UNSMIL announced on Saturday that, the 5+5 Joint Military Commission will meet for the first time in Libya from 2 to 4 November in a fifth round of talks. The city of Ghadames will host the meetings and Williams will participate in them.
