EU-UNSMIL Work Together to Improve Libyan Lives

The Head of the European Union’s delegation to Libya, Jose Sabadell, said on Wednesday that the EU is working with the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) to improve the lives of the Libyan people.

In a tweet, Sabadell said, “The United Nations Support Mission in Tripoli (UNSMIL), supported by Economic Working Group and the European Union (EU), as well as an impressive team of representatives from economic institutions throughout Libya have worked together in Geneva to find solutions to improve the lives of citizens, including the exchange rate unification, and better access to cash.”

Sabadell added that this must lead to the unification of the national budget and institutions. “The work was done by blending flawless technical expertise with a clear vision for a better future for Libya. Congratulations to all participants for an excellent selfless job!” he said.

In his tweet, Sabadell explained that access to frozen oil revenues was necessary to improve service delivery for all Libyans, including for health, electricity, and water. This must be done in a way that will not fuel corruption or worsen the conflict.

He pointed out that economic experts, military officers, mayors, tribal leaders, activists, and civil society from across Libya are contributing to building consensus towards change, demanded by the Libyan people. “Politicians would be wise to follow their example. This is a time for compromise and courage,” he said.
