The Acting Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General held a meeting with members of the UN Security Council to discuss the situation in Libya.
During the meeting, the Security Council members expressed their concern over the significant escalation of hostilities in Libya, especially in light of the threat posed by the Coronavirus pandemic in the country.
They called on the Libyan warring parties to de-escalate the fighting and stop all hostilities, while requesting assurances that humanitarian access would not be hindered throughout the country.
The members of the Security Council called on all member states to comply with the arms embargo to Libya.
They also reaffirmed the sovereignty, independence, territorial integrity and national unity of Libya, stressing the importance of the United Nations’ role in facilitating the political process in the North African country.
At the end of the meeting, the members praised former UN Special Representative in Libya Ghassan Salamé for his efforts to end the Libyan conflict.
