On Saturday, Ezzedine Qweireb, a Member of the Libyan Parliament, said that the constitutional referendum process could be held after the general elections, which are scheduled for the 24th of December 2021.

In a press statement, Qweireb said that the legal experts meeting in Hurghada decided to follow the referendum process on the constitution as the right and authentic path.

“Among the proposals that were reviewed, was the proposal to conduct presidential and parliamentary elections in one process, according to the proposal of the February Commission in the event that the referendum could not be held before the general elections,” he noted.

Libyan legal and constitutional experts are meeting in the Egyptian city of Hurghada to hold talks on the constitutional basis for organising elections in December. Head of the High National Elections Commission (HNEC), Emad Al-Sayeh, the United Nation Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), and the Egyptian committee concerned with the Libyan crisis, will participate in the meetings.

Earlier this month, Mohamed Al-Menfi was elected as the new Head of the Libyan Presidential Council, while Hamid Dbeibahwas named as Prime Minister. The transitional government will lead the country until national elections take place on the 24th of December 2021.

The interim government must obtain the confidence of Parliament within 21 days, UNSMIL’s Acting Head, Stephanie Williams has said. The Presidential Council consists of Al-Menfi and three Deputies, namely Musa Al-Koni, AbdAllah Hussein Al-Lafi, and Prime Minister Dbeibah.
