On Monday, Head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), Jan Kubis welcomed the swearing-in ceremony of the Government of National Unity (GNU) before the Libyan Parliament during its session in Tobruk.

In a statement, Kubis congratulated Prime Minister Abdel-Hamid Dbaiba and his cabinet, as well as the new Presidential Council. He encouraged them to swiftly address the many challenges facing the Libyan people, improve living conditions and basic services, and prepare the country for general elections on 24 December 2021.

Kubis also commended the Parliament, its leadership, and members who came together for the benefit of the people and the country.

“Today’s swearing-in session illustrates the eagerness and the determination of the Libyans to overcome their differences, work for a better future for all, march together towards unity, national reconciliation, transitional justice, equality, and the empowerment of women and youth. As well as building a united, sovereign, independent and democratic state, governed by the rule of law and the respect for human rights for all,” Kubis stated.

The UN Special Envoy concluded that UNSMIL and its international partners stand ready to continue providing all necessary support to the Libyan people, and state institutions.
