Al-Dhgaili: Transitional Justice Will Help Achieve National Reconciliation

On Saturday, Dr. Salwa Al-Dghaili, a member of the Libyan Political Dialogue Forum (LPDF), said that ensuring transitional justice will surely pave the way for achieving a real national reconciliation.

In a series of tweets, Al-Dgaili stressed the importance of achieving national reconciliation in Libya in order to avoid further bloodshed among Libyans. She added that it is the necessary step to re-establish the Libyan state on legitimate, pluralistic and democratic foundations.

“The special and exceptional nature of transitional justice requires a balance between human rights principles and victims’ expectations on the one hand, and the politics’ constraints and its complexities on the other hand,” she explained.

The LPDF member reaffirmed that national reconciliation is a direct outcome of transitional justice. Therefore, it is not possible to talk about reconciliation, its challenges, and the legal problems it faces without achieving transitional justice.

Notably, the Head of the Presidential Council, Muhammad Al Mnifi, recently emphasized the need to press on towards establishing a National Reconciliation Commission to achieve inclusive national reconciliation.

Al Mnifi also stressed that achieving comprehensive national reconciliation that brings together all Libyans is a top priority for the Presidential Council, as it is the cornerstone of building a unified civil state.

The United Nations Support Mission to Libya (UNSMIL) also welcomed the efforts by Libya’s Government of National Unity (GNU) on national reconciliation, saying it hopes that nationwide reconciliation would be achieved as soon as possible.
