US Ambassador Richard Norland, stressed his country’s support for the efforts of the Libyan government and economic institutions, in facing the unprecedented challenges brought about from the emergence of the Coronavirus in Libya.
Norland’s remarks came during a meeting with the Government of National Accord’s (GNA) Finance Minister, Faraj Boumtari, and Deputy Assistant Secretary of the US Treasury Eric Meyer. Norland noted that it was of the utmost importance that the government should, ensure public sector wages be paid on time and to immediately allocate the necessary funds for the National Center for Disease Control (NCDC) and various municipalities to face the pandemic.
In the same context, the US Embassy to Libya announced on March 29th, that it would provide $6 million in humanitarian aid to Libya in response to COVID-19. The Embassy added that the funds will help health officials to prevent the spread of the disease, and respond to the needs of those who have contracted or who are most at risk of contracting the virus.
It should be noted that the number of confirmed cases of Coronavirus in Libya has risen to eight.
