On Tuesday, Libyan Foreign Minister Najla Al-Mangoush confirmed that she had invited the United States to reopen its embassy and consulate in Tripoli and Benghazi, as a message to the stability of Libya.
During a press conference with US Acting Assistant Secretary of State, Joey Hood, Al-Mangoush said that “we emphasise the necessity of extending national sovereignty over all of Libya, ending the presence of foreign forces, providing security for the people, ending the state of armed conflict, unifying state institutions, and freeing national sovereign decisions from any material or moral coercion.”
Al-Mangoush called for the support of the United States to pressure the international community to fulfil its obligations, respect the United Nations resolutions, support the ceasefire agreement, and implement the results of the Libyan 5+5 Joint Military Commission (JMC).
“We called for the formation of a stability group headed by Libya to unify international positions,” she added.
The FM stated that the Government of National Unity (GNU) looks forward to working with the United States and its special envoy to Libya, in order to “fulfil all the obligations stipulated in the Libyan Political Dialogue Forum (LPDF) roadmap, and to implement the relevant United Nations resolutions.”
Al-Mangoush clarified that she stressed the need for the United States to support the GNU to achieve the goals of the roadmap. The most prominent of which is to provide the necessary conditions for holding the December elections, that would enhance political legitimacy in the country.
