Deputy Head of Libya’s Presidential Council, Abdullah Al-Lafi held a meeting with the Head of the Security Institutions Division of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), Salim Raad.

The meeting focused on the roadmap to unify the military institution, through the 5+5 Joint Military Commission (JMC). Raad praised the work undertaken by the JMC during the past months, including efforts to reopen the coastal road linking the east and west of the country.

Raad added that this matter will “instil confidence between the rival parties, and spread the spirit of reassurance to citizens by excluding the return of war again.” He also stressed the importance of the national reconciliation process launched by the Presidential Council, paving the way for elections to be held in December.

Al-Lafi described the opening and securing of the coastal road and the success of the JMC as factors that will contribute to the cultivation of confidence between the rival parties. He added that it will be the beginning of the unification of the military establishment.

The Deputy President underscored the importance of national reconciliation as a lifeline to resolve the crisis, and ensure Libya’s stability.
